Space Queen on Tour

Here is the same version of my coat as featured on the runway.

I loved how Junya Watanabe re-worked major elements of classic menswear/British heritage in his FW2012 collection. I did think of going down the easy route by pairing it with trousers and brogues, but I decided to experiment and went for an off-kilter direction instead.

One Scarf, Many Looks

April 3, 2013

There’s no denying that a big part of the ‘dark aesthetics’ relies heavily on drapes, notably early Rick Owens’ dresses inspired by Madame Gres. It is with this thought in mind that I bought a long piece of light fabric months ago, roughly about ten feet or in the glorious metric system – 3 meters, to play with the idea of DIY draping. I have incorporated it in the previous outfits, which you can look at here and here.

In a recent trip to the outdoors, I wore my favourite Improvd dress over a plain maxi skirt, to which I added the aforementioned fabric to play around with. What started with a very pristine look soon turned quite unexpected along the course of the day.

So at first I had it wrapped and tucked neatly like this, which almost resembled a sari.

And then I thought of adjusting the scarf so it’d have a hood, which ended up exaggerating my bum and rendering my frontal curves non-existent, perhaps an unconscious nod to Comme des Garcons’s take on unconventional beauty.

After a while I got bored with a hood so I did a bit of Junya Watanabe-ish sort of arm restraint, which is again done unintentionally. Bear in mind I have no mirror at all in the outdoors so the results were accidental, but nevertheless more than satisfactory.

There were several other slightly different adjustments in between (because the bloody thing kept slipping off when not tucked in properly) but I posted the most interesting ones. And lastly the last permutation of my magical $10 scarf, which by the end of the day has become completely haphazard.

Return of Yohji

There comes a point in one’s fashion journey when fatigue and boredom set in, when you just want to take a break and not give a toss about looking nice, let alone keeping up to date with the industry itself. And by you, I mean me.But not to worry, I’ll be back soon with more substantial walls of text. In the meantime, I’d like to chime in on how tough it is to ‘get’ the Yohji sensibilities for someone who is so used to extreme rigidity and fluid drapes. I own very few of his garments, but I’m glad to have caught hold of this piece, which helped to explain why many Yohji fans have become monotheists.

Quintessentially CdG

March 8, 2013

There’s a lot to be said about Rei Kawakubo’s sense of humour. No matter how much she denies it, one can usually read the satirical messages underlying her collections. For her SS2011 collection, she sent out a few dresses reminiscent of what mothers love to put on their adolescent daughters, big puffy dresses with in-built scratchy tulles. I used to cry whenever my own mom forced me into one of those heinous pink monstrosities because they were so uncomfortable, plus all I wanted to wear were t-shirts and shorts (to say that I was a tomboy is an understatement). And here I am finding myself in a dress of similar silhouette and loving it, partly because Ms. Kawakubo didn’t need to add tulles to give the dress volume.

In a way the entire collection is a successful exercise in shapes and structure, many of them made of PVC, a material most people shun for being cheap. Yet it is so like her to use the most unexpected material to create her weirdly beautiful babydoll dresses (unlike Mr. Slimane who probably used fantastic fabrics for his unoriginal version of grunge-y ones). It offered an insight into my own preference, in that I value ideas, techniques and craftsmanship over materials, just as long as the materials themselves are not of poor quality. I did think it would be rather nice if the garments were re-made in the best leathers, but to do so would be losing what is quintessentially Comme des Garcons.
