Lift Me Up

October 9, 2009

by Gracia Ventus

As a person who constantly listens to headbanging, hair-raising music, I’m constantly inspired by the fashion movements of the metal and goth subcultures. I suppose I have deviated somewhat these days since I have become more obsessed with avant-garde, architectural pieces, but just two years ago I was a walking poster for rock-stars wannabes, sporting black jeans, biker boots and unkempt long hair (the messier the better) to my jamming sessions with the boys.

Despite the drastic changes that have occured over the years these influences are still quite apparent in my choices of clothes and shoes, as shown by the fact that looking at buckles and leather gets my pulse racing, not to mention owning two pairs of Dr Martens and another few pairs of military boots (which might have stepped on Afghan soil). However, the today-me loves prancing around in sky-high heels and wedges, so I figured it’s high time I infuse the hardcore military/grunge/biker/goth boots into my wardrobe the high fashion way.

From top left: Demonia, Chloe, Pennangalan, Pennangalan, Tory Burch, Dr Martens, Burberry

I searched through pretty much all combat boots with some sorta platform or chunkiness in them, since anything dainty or with stiletto heels would just look like any other ankle boots.

The Pennangalan boots were found some months back. It’s also kickass site for anyone who loves goth boots and winklepickers (YUM). Anyhoo, it’s wierd how many months ago such chunky platform heights would be deemed as absurd and associated only with strippers, but with the rising heights of platforms to ridiculous levels on the runways, these boots look pretty alright now.

I’m still looking around for more options. If you guys could help me out in this department it’d be totally awesome!

Frolicking Frocks

October 8, 2009

by Gracia Ventus

See I have always loved avant garde vintage dresses. I can spend hours finding vintage gems on Ebay purely just to ogle. However these days I found myself wanting to own them despite not having any occasions to wear them to, purely because they’re such inspirational pieces and perhaps one day I shall replicate them in other colours and materials.

These two dresses were auctioned in Ebay a month ago. I got outbid on both occasions. For those who have experienced that you know how vexing it can be to lose at the last few seconds.

So anyway I kept hunting for the tailcoat dress and after weeks of perseverance I finally got it at a decent price.

I know I should have accessorised a little or layer it or something but as usual I was just too excited when receiving the pretty dress. And then sometime later I remembered this:

Speaking of Balmain, the S/S 10 collection is quite a disappointment IMHO. I just spent a whole day looking through all the fashion shows on style.com and I’ve picked out my favourite looks (about 150 of them). The next post shall be extremely image heavy.

Calling out to anyone selling YSL’s Muse Two in Multicolour Suede

October 7, 2009

by Gracia Ventus

An overdue picture of the gaudy that happened last month. It was the only picture that I liked out of the whole night, sans the silly flash lights.

On another note, I’m contemplating on buying this YSL Muse Two in the large size.

Yes I do realise that this colour was released last year. And yes tons of people are carrying the Muse Twos but really, I don’t think I quite care about it. I’m not bothered about what’s in and out of season. My only problems now are to raise enough cash for it, and more importantly, find someone who is selling it. The only person I know who was selling it some weeks ago took hers down from Ebay as her friend wanted to purchase it :(

Good piece of reading

October 6, 2009

by Gracia Ventus

I hardly read magazines these days because I tend to dislike reading the lengthy articles. Don’t get me wrong, I do love to read thick novels and such, but when it comes to fashion, I’m a pictorial person. I’d rather admire and gape at the glossy pictures then squint at the tiny type. It doesn’t help that the mags these days are featuring similar stuff straight out of the runway or are just too generic (plus knowing that I couldn’t afford the clothes are kinda off-putting as well).

Then I found an online magazine just yesterday. It’s called Fashion156.

Dress and scarf by Neda Haghighat. Shoes by Finsk.

Dress and black boots by Holly Fulton.

Poloneck, jacket and pompom headdress by Tim Ryan. Tights by Pamela Mann. Shoes by Rupert Sanderson.

I’m very much fascinated by the fact that I’m finding more avant-garde, independent designers from just one editorial alone than one whole edition of Vogue, Purple, or Russh, especially in the footwear department. Although I’m not liking all the pieces I see, they are nevertheless very interesting.

Dress by Emilio de la Morena, Tights at mytights.com. AW07/08
Love love love the dress but I doubt I will walk out of the house in it.

Crop Jacket by Diane Von Furstenberg. Veil by Monique Luttin. SS09.

One of the most inspiring photograph from a recent editorial:

Headpiece, dress and shoes from Tour de Force’s S/S 2010 collection.

As soon as I laid eyes on the shoes, I know I had to find out who Tour de Force is. At this moment they are only churning out loud, whimsical headwear pieces, but I’m looking forward to see their footwear collection for the upcoming season.

If you’re into something different, do check this site out. I guarantee it’ll be worth your while. Their ‘hype’ section is worth perusing too.

The Great Op-Shop Hunt

October 5, 2009

by Gracia Ventus

This is Louis. He’s my partner in crime in our Op-shop heists. Well it wasn’t planned that way in the beginning. We were just thinking of driving around to random places, but we had no idea that that we’d come across so many thrift shops like Salvos and Vinnies in every small little towns. So after the first day we decided that the next few days will be spent bargain-hunting, while squeezing some sightseeing places into the itinery.

We visited Phillip Island on the first and second day. We wanted to see the penguins on the first day, but looking at the ticket prices we realised we were too cheap for them. Went there again the second day to visit all the op-shops we passed by along the way with a final pit stop at the chocolate store/factory.

Louis got his blazer (and the flannel shirt) at the Savers at Dandenong and he’s been wearing it ever since. Can’t blame him considering that it made him so much more like an English now.

On the third day we went north-east of Melbourne and found this pretty little town called Healesville…..

….where Louis got himself a handsome leather jacket.

Despite the size of this town, the treasures are simply amazing! Endless racks of clothes at amazingly cheap prices.

The Op-Shop Bandits raided more stores but these were the ones I managed to take, or rather the more memorable ones.

The whole trip was just pure random fun. I’d say Louis was the winner of this Op-Shop hunt. He managed to snag whole outfits and the coolest suits.

…plus the snazziest brogues for under ten bucks.

My spoils pale in comparison.

Got myself an Anthea Crawford blouse, the comfiest men’s trousers, and a tweed blazer (below) for just under $1! Of course there were more that I looted but these are the cooler ones, including a pair of skate shoes and three men’s white shirts. I found myself spending a lot more time at the men’s section looking at suits and trousers than the women’s section.

On a side note, I’m loving my new boots very much.
