Fashion is cyclical. Almost 99% of the designs we see on the runway are modern updates of older ideas. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, but there are some trends which I’d rather not see the light of the day again. One such example is the clogs, newly revived, but not necessarily revamped, by the almighty Chanel and Miu Miu (above). I shall not elaborate on my personal views on them as this article from the Telegraph has pretty much summed up my feelings.
“It is simply that clogs are, without question, the most monstrous and despised of all shoes. One might call them the work of the devil, only the devil would be sartorially savvy enough to sport Louboutin spikes.”
Now for all you long-time fans of clogs, I respect your choices, I definitely do, despite my strong dislike towards them. But what I am perplexed about is the fanfare around clogs that Alexa Chung has created in the fashion community.
Why just because she wore them to several fashion shows and on a mag cover, a sizeable number of girls (in forums, blogs, etc) started to gush over them. You can bet that 99% of these girls were screeching at the mere mention of clogs before Kaiser Karl sent the Chanel girls down the hay-covered runway. Needless to say the high-street retailers are quick to milk the cash cow coughsjeffreycampbellcoughs. And they are proving to be rather popular too.
As with all fashion fads, if you do decide to go with the flow, please take time to think about how these wooden contraption would look on your feet (I will not touch on the subject of comfort because in fashion it is always compromised). Just because Alexa carried them off ok, does not mean you can too.
